Stutt Associates puts people at the heart of legal practice.
When Lisa Haywood and Lee Stutt look back at the beginnings of Stutt Associates, there is a sense that the firm was always going to happen. The timing was less certain. Lisa had spent five years parenting after the local firm where she trained closed in 2013, before returning to work as Lee’s assistant. Lee was already a partner and one of the owners of one of Cornwall’s largest law firms, where he had headed the litigation team for more than a decade. Somewhere along the way, they discovered they made a very good team – professionally and personally.
They also discovered a shared dissatisfaction with the conventions of legal practice. Both describe themselves as non-conformists, and both had become frustrated by what they saw as an archaic approach to running a law firm, with rigid procedures and a style of business that could leave clients feeling intimidated. When the opportunity came to create something of their own, they took it.
Stutt Associates was Lisa’s original vision, with Lee fully behind the values that shaped it. Starting with a clean sheet, she developed the branding, marketing and values, with clients, community and workers placed at the centre of decision-making. Accessibility was fundamental. The intention was to create a legal service where people could make contact comfortably, including those who found themselves caught in gaps between available funding options.
That philosophy continues to influence how the firm operates. Stutt Associates has challenged conventional office hours, fee structures and the formality that can surround legal services, while using technology to make its work more efficient. Among its tools is a bespoke Legal AI System developed for the firm’s own way of working. Lee and Lisa say it helps refine workflows, identify details that might otherwise be missed and provide clients with deeper analysis, with the resulting efficiencies helping to control costs.
For all the technology, the heart of the business remains decidedly human. Litigation can arrive in someone’s life at an already difficult moment, whether it involves a business, property or another serious dispute. The Stutt Associates approach is to understand the individual circumstances of each client and work towards an outcome they can live with. Every case brings a different set of problems, which is one reason the work continues to hold their interest.
Their partnership is an important part of that. Lisa describes herself as fiercely organised, admitting that she can take this to the point of being overzealous. Lee is technical and persistent, with what they cheerfully describe as the determination of a “nerdy dog with a bone”. Their professional strengths occupy different territory, too. Lisa’s focus is commercial work, particularly the challenges businesses encounter through success and failure, while Lee specialises in property disputes, with particular expertise in commercial property.
Asked whether Stutt Associates would exist if they had never met, their answer comes with characteristic humour: there would be no firm, and no youngest three children either. Their joke about being Cornwall’s “biggest power couple in Cornish legal” is swiftly followed by the admission that it is, of course, a joke. What is serious is the partnership itself: two experienced lawyers who found that working together gave them the chance to build a firm around the kind of legal service they believed people needed.
