Natural swimming ponds that merge wellbeing and ecology with interpretative landscape design.

Cornwall has long drawn swimmers outdoors, especially along its shoreline. However, a growing interest in natural swimming ponds is bringing a familiar experience into a carefully designed setting. At the forefront of this movement is Natural Pools Cornwall, a company shaped by a lifelong appreciation of swimming in ‘living’ water and a belief that recreation and ecology can sit comfortably side by side.

The inspiration reaches back to childhood days spent in ponds, rivers and other freshwater places. Those early experiences fostered an enduring understanding of the pleasures of swimming beyond tiled walls and chemical treatments. They also informed a vision for creating spaces that offer the sensory rewards of natural water within environments engineered for regular recreational use.

Natural swimming ponds are frequently misunderstood. Some assume they are little more than ornamental ponds adapted for swimming, while others imagine they require little attention once constructed. In practice, they are sophisticated systems that rely on biological filtration, water circulation and careful management. Natural swimming pools encompass a wide spectrum of designs, from formal geometric pools adjoining the home to naturalistic swim ponds set within the wider landscape, yet all are united by the same principle of natural water purification rather than conventional chemical treatment. Aquatic plants, gravel filtration zones and beneficial microorganisms work together to maintain water quality, creating conditions that support healthy swimming while fostering a stronger connection between water, wildlife and the surrounding environment.

For many users, the appeal lies in the character of the water itself. Naturally filtered water can feel gentler on the skin and eyes, while the experience of swimming outdoors encourages a closer engagement with the surrounding landscape. At a time when warmer summers are increasing demand for outdoor cooling and recreation, these environments are attracting attention as a practical addition to gardens, hospitality venues and community spaces.

The company’s approach is illustrated by a recent project on a sloping site where topography presented a significant challenge. Excavated soil was retained and reshaped into an earth bund that stabilised the ground and helped contain the water body. Once planted with native and ornamental species, the structure became an integral landscape feature, contributing habitat, visual interest and privacy. What began as an engineering requirement evolved into a defining part of the finished design.

That philosophy of working with a site’s existing conditions runs throughout Natural Pools Cornwall’s projects. Every pond is conceived as part of a wider landscape, delivering opportunities for wildlife, supporting biodiversity and creating places that remain attractive throughout the year.

Looking ahead, the ambition is to expand the presence of natural swimming ponds across Cornwall and the South West, creating healthy outdoor environments that support wellbeing while contributing positively to local ecosystems. In bringing together recreation, environmental stewardship and landscape design, Natural Pools Cornwall is helping shape a future in which swimming and nature share the same water.
