A lifetime at sea inspires David Stamp’s evocative paintings of maritime life.

David Stamp’s art journey is inextricably tied to the rhythm and unpredictability of the ocean. For decades, the sea has been his workplace and teacher. From the weightless clarity of working as a diver to the heavy responsibility of being a skipper, David has viewed the water from every angle. Serving as a crew member for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and investigating maritime incidents further deepened his reverence for its immense power. In the face of these intense and challenging environments, art became his sanctuary, providing a space to process a lifetime of raw, elemental experiences.

For a long time, he was based in St Ives, Cornwall, a coastal haven that has drawn artists for centuries. Walking those historic cobblestone streets, he absorbed the unique Cornish light and drew immense inspiration from the local galleries. Surrounded by this creative legacy, David found his own voice through oil and mixed media. The rich fluidity of oils allows him to capture the deep, shifting gradients of open water and the dramatic play of light on a swelling wave. By incorporating mixed media, he gives his work a physical texture that evokes the coarse grit of salt, the rust of ageing hulls and the rugged tactility of life at sea.”

Now, as a sailor in the latter chapters of his life, he translates these memories onto the canvas. Every piece he creates is rooted in a specific lived experience – from the quiet isolation of the underwater world to the adrenaline of being out there in a storm. His art goes beyond capturing a picturesque view; it is a testament to humanity’s profound connection to the elements, giving fleeting maritime moments a permanent shoreline.

David exhibits at the Old Lifeboat Station in Porthleven twice a year, as well as at a few art galleries and art fairs throughout the year.
