Litigation with clarity

Practical, client-led representation across complex civil litigation.

In a legal market where many firms still operate according to inherited patterns, Stutt Associates has chosen a narrower, more exacting path. The practice deals exclusively with civil disputes. From the outset, its lawyers have focused on contentious matters, building depth through repetition and experience rather than dilution across multiple departments.

Central to the firm’s approach is the idea that every client can shape how their case is handled. Service level agreements are agreed upon at the outset and reflect individual preferences. Some clients opt for email updates only; others want scheduled calls, instant messaging or contact outside conventional office hours. Fees can be fixed to stages or defined pieces of work, and clients may choose a ‘light’ or ‘high level’ service depending on the financial or emotional weight of the dispute. The intention is practical: clients decide how much involvement they want, from handing matters over entirely to seeking advice while retaining control of the groundwork.

Lisa Haywood, owner and manager, trained in Cornwall from apprentice to associate and has worked solely in disputes. She explains the demands of the responsibility plainly: “A disputes lawyer is a challenging role. It is very important that clients feel supported and that you have their back. They need to know you will fight for the outcome they need, but also that you will let them vent and discuss the hard issues.” She is direct about the risks. “Because litigation is not something to undertake lightly: it is extremely emotionally draining, time-consuming and often risky and costly too.” Clients are therefore kept firmly in charge. “We make sure our clients are always in the driving seat, know what is happening and why and have full autonomy over decision-making.”

Communication is treated as a discipline. Advice is delivered in plain English, with reasons given and strategy explained. The firm’s preference is for brevity and accuracy; clients are told what the lawyers think, not presented with evasive summaries.

Lisa is joined by Consultant Lee Stutt, formerly Head of Litigation at a large regional firm, who brings more than two decades of experience in disputes, including acting in cases which have shaped the law.  He is also an accredited mediator. Together they handle a huge breadth of disputes, concerning property, inheritance, insolvency and business.

For clients facing arguments over homes, livelihoods or significant sums, technical competence is assumed. What often decides the instruction is trust. Stutt Associates has been built largely on recommendations, a sign that in disputes, credibility comes from trust and relationships as much as from positive outcomes.
